Sarasota is home to many beautiful attractions – from scenic beaches to a vibrant arts and culture scene to delicious restaurants, and beyond. In addition to all there is to do for seniors in this beautiful city, Sarasota is also home to the famous, world-class, and family-friendly Nathan Benderson Park. This park is the most popular park in the Sarasota County Park system, and it’s right in our neighborhood.Whether you’re a current or prospective resident at Aviva or are just looking for things to do in Sarasota, here are some ways to get your exercise in at the beautiful Benderson Park.

Ways to Stay Active at Benderson Park

Exercise is extremely important for your health, and has proven to be highly beneficial for seniors. Spending time in the great outdoors can work wonders for both mental and physical health. From leisurely activities to working up a sweat, there are a wide range of activities you can do to enhance your exercise regimen both on land and in the water at Benderson Park.

1. Get Some Cardio In

With seven miles of shell and paved trails, Benderson Park is the perfect place to get a breath of fresh air and your heart rate up. Go for a run or walk on these trails and enjoy the scenic Florida views and weather. Bring friends or family to get some exercise and fresh air together. In addition to your own cardiovascular exercise regimen, the park also hosts various events that can help you get your steps in such as the Southeastern Guide Dogs Walkathon, themed runs, and triathlons. They also offer Zumba classes led by certified instructors if you enjoy getting your groove on.

2. See the Sights

If you’re looking for different ways to explore nature while getting a good workout, Benderson Park offers bicycle rentals for two and four hours. If you’re a fan of being on the water, switch up your exercise regimen by renting a single or double kayak or a pedal kayak.

3. Stretch, Relax, and Be Mindful

Stretching exercises and yoga are highly beneficial for older adults. They can help you improve your flexibility and range of motion, while also strengthening your bones and muscles. In addition, yoga can lower your stress levels and blood pressure. Benderson Park puts on a “Yoga in the Park” event for people of all skill and fitness levels on the first Sunday of every month. This is the perfect opportunity to have a change of pace from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

4. Get Rowing

If you want to get involved in organized sports, consider becoming part of the NBP Community Rowing Club. Rowing is a great form of exercise for seniors – it’s low-impact, gets your heart pumping, and is a full-body workout. Plus, it’s a fun way to meet people while getting involved in your community. They also offer classes for you to learn the basic fundamentals of rowing.

5. Do a Stength Training Class

Benderson Park is home to many regularly-scheduled exercise classes. Flex Fitness, for example, is a strength training program that’s instructed by a certified personal trainer. They offer group strength training, personal and couples training, and training programs specifically designed for seniors.Along with the many ways you can exercise, this park also regularly hosts events for all ages and interests – from food to music to entertainment, and beyond. Exercise Benefits for Seniors

As you age, maintaining good health is of the utmost importance. Not only can it improve your quality of life, but can also help you live longer. Exercise has been proven to be highly beneficial for people of all ages. It can help with chronic disease management and prevention, improve mental health, lower cholesterol, mitigate the risk of injury, and much more. Seniors should try to adhere to a well-balanced diet, stay hydrated, and exercise regularly to reap the ultimate benefits of a healthy lifestyle.Exercising outside, and specifically at Benderson Park, also offers many benefits. Studies show that spending time near bodies of water can uplift your spirits – and Benderson Park has a lake where you can participate in water sports, take a stroll around the water, or kick back, relax, and enjoy the view as you rest between exercises.Getting sun exposure (safely with UV protection) can help you boost your vitamin D production. Vitamin D is known to help with calcium absorption and, in turn, can improve bone health and strength, lowering the risk of osteoporosis. In addition, it can lower inflammation, boost your mood, and improve immunity. Spending time outdoors can also lower your blood pressure and stress levels, improve sleep, help you concentrate, and more.Aviva Senior Living is conveniently located right down the street from Benderson Park, about three miles away.
